Championship baseball is coming home to Madison tonight, and this is a fun one for our Huntsville and Madison families. The Rocket City Trash Pandas lead the Biloxi Shuckers 1–0 in the best-of-three Southern League Championship Series after a 5–4 comeback win Sunday night in Biloxi. Game 2 is tonight, September 22, at 6:35 p.m. CT at Toyota Field. A Rocket City win would clinch the Trash Pandas’ first Southern League championship. So, naturally, I have a Spanish lesson for the occasion. 😊 Whether your family is heading to Toyota Field or following the game from home, try using a few of these phrases together. Kids learn so much when a new language is connected to something exciting that is already happening around them. ## Baseball Words to Know in Spanish Start with just a few. You do not need to memorize the whole list before the first pitch! **el béisbol** — baseball **el equipo** — team **el jugador / la jugadora** — player **la pelota** — ball **el bate** — bat **el estadio** — stadium **el partido** — game **la carrera** — run **el jonrón** — home run **el campeonato** — championship Here is an easy challenge for younger kids: choose three words before the game and listen for moments when you can say them. See a player pick up the bat? **¡El bate!** Someone scores? **¡Una carrera!** And if a Trash Panda sends one over the fence? You know what to yell: **¡Jonrón!** ## Three Phrases Your Family Can Actually Use Tonight Vocabulary is helpful, but I especially love giving kids complete little phrases they can use in a real moment. ### 1. ¡Vamos, Trash Pandas! This is the easiest one. **¡Vamos!** can mean “Let’s go!” in exactly the kind of cheering situation we have tonight. So when Rocket City needs a big hit, the whole family can say: **¡Vamos, Trash Pandas!** Yes, this one is especially appropriate for a business called Hola Let’s Go. 😉 ### 2. ¡Qué buena jugada! That means: **What a great play!** If someone makes a great catch or turns an exciting play, try saying it together. You can shorten it for younger children, too: **¡Qué bien!** — Great! / Well done! ### 3. ¡Ganamos! Save this one for the moment we are all hoping for. **¡Ganamos!** means: **We won!** But no practicing that one too early. We do not want to jinx anything! ## Turn the Game Into a Spanish Challenge Here is a simple game you can play without distracting anyone from the baseball. Before the game, give each person in the family one Spanish word. For example: Mom gets **la pelota**. Dad gets **el bate**. One child gets **la carrera**. Another gets **el jonrón**. Whenever your thing happens during the game, you have to say the Spanish word. Older kids can level it up by using a complete sentence: **¡Es un jonrón!** — It’s a home run! **¡Una carrera más!** — One more run! **¡Vamos a ganar!** — Let’s win! The point is not perfect grammar or pronunciation. The point is getting comfortable actually using Spanish while your attention is on something fun. ## A Little Local History Makes Tonight Even More Special There is some wonderful Huntsville-area baseball history behind tonight’s game. Biloxi’s franchise previously played here as the Huntsville Stars before relocating to Mississippi for the 2015 season. According to the Trash Pandas, tonight marks the return of Southern League Championship Series baseball to the Huntsville area for the first time since 2007. Rocket City is also trying to bring the area its first outright Southern League championship since the Huntsville Stars won in 1994. That gives families a fun conversation starter: **¿Quién va a ganar?** Who is going to win? Let everyone make a prediction before the game. Then ask: **¿Cuántas carreras?** How many runs? Even a child who knows only numbers can answer in Spanish: **¡Cinco!** And just like that, championship night has become Spanish practice without feeling like Spanish practice at all. ## Spanish Belongs in Real Life This is one of the things I want families to remember most about learning another language. Spanish does not have to live inside a workbook. It can be at the breakfast table. It can be in the car. It can be at the grocery store. And tonight, it can be at Toyota Field. When children connect Spanish with family memories, games, laughter, and things happening in their own community, the language starts to feel useful and alive. So if you are cheering tonight, try adding just one new phrase: **¡Vamos, Trash Pandas!** And if everything goes the way Rocket City hopes, maybe we will all get to practice one more: **¡Ganamos!**
